World
Celebrating his 20th anniversary, musician, writer and producer, Lex Justice (September6) fuses classic reggae, R&B, jazz and rock to create a sound and style that is fresh but relatable. He founded the Indie rock group SUGAKANE, fronted and wrote for Blues group JIMMY & The SLEEPERS and created the Industrial Metal Group KINGDOOM, a band that included Chris Vrenna (NINE INCH NAILS and MARYLIN MANSON). Enjoy originals from Terrell's 2018 Edmonton Music Award nominated album Unchainedas well as some Jazz standards, classic soul and Motown favourites.

Celtic
Over the course of their notable career, Canadian group Leahy (September 12) has secured a place as one of the country’s most highly regarded progressive folk-roots bands. Special Events
Join authors and historians David O’Keefe and Ted Barris for an evening of discovery, storytelling and reflection in From Dieppe to D-Day – the Untold Story (September13). Two of the defining moments of Canada’s role in liberating northwestern Europe during WWII happened within a few hundred miles of each other. Why was one considered a disaster, the other a victory? What was it like for individual Canadians involved? Even after 75 years, questions remain.

For the last 16 years, the Festival Players have captivated audiences over the Christmas season with their renditions of musical favourites. Festival Place 25th Anniversary Musical Revue (September 21), celebrates Festival Players and the extraordinary gift their productions bring to Festival Place audiences.

Toronto pianist, producer and composer, John Sheard, takes local fans on a walk down memory lane with his show Remembering Stuart McLean, featuring pianist John Sheard, The Brilliant Band & Guest Vocalists (September 28). The intimate evening of backstage stories, tour-bus tales, music and humour from 20 years on the road with Stuart, is an honest and genuine tribute to a man he spent so many years building memories with.

Blues
For 41 years, Tom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues (September 14) have been Canada’s leading blues band, selling over 1 million records worldwide. Highlights include winning a JUNO award for “Most Promising Group of the Year”, headlining the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival, winning the Blues Foundation award and touring the US and Europe with legends like Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and James Brown.

Since 2008, the name MonkeyJunk (September 26) has been synonymous with the emergence of a new kind of blues on the Canadian and international music scene. Continually pushing boundaries and blurring genre lines, the Ottawa based trio has added an edge to their music by incorporating swampy blues and rock with thoughtful and intelligent lyrics. MonkeyJunk has won a collective 21 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, one Blues Music Award (USA) and have been nominated three times for a JUNO Award, winning the award twice for “Blues Album of the Year” in 2012 for To Behold and in 2018 for Time To Roll.

Multi-award winning Australian artist Lloyd Spiegel (September 26, Cafe Series) delivers one of the most unique solo concert experiences in the world. Blending jaw-dropping guitar chops with a commanding voice, powerful songwriting, storytelling and comedy, he’s described as an “Oz Roots & Blues Icon” (Rolling Stone Australia).

Classical & Vocal
Pianist James 'Kingsley' Clarke (September 23) is turning heads with his unforgettable musical style and unique artistic flair. Bringing a bold new blend of jazz and gospel to the keys, James is a truly incredible artist. Already with two successful albums, and a third on the way, his signature touch and memorable performances are garnering recognition across Canada's jazz scene. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Festival Place, James is pleased to be sharing the stage with three superb local choirs: The Festival Singers, Nottingham Choir, and the Josephburg Choral Society.

It’s a sleek chic close to the season as we revisit this vivacious contemporary spin on the classic screwball form, last performed by Teatro in 2002. Haberdashery, industrial espionage, and the finest of onions… All figure prominently in this ricochet romp, which ratchets things up further with three identical briefcases and a scintillating cast led by Belinda Cornish and Andrew MacDonald‑Smith.

An Evening of Humour with John Cleese

Spend an Evening of Humour with the one and only John Cleese as he examines the dysfunctional world we live in and “why there is no hope”.

Best known for Monty Python’s Flying CircusFawlty Towers; and A Fish Called Wanda; Cleese is often referred to as "the world’s funniest man". He first made his mark as a member of the legendary Monty Python troupe in the 1960s and has gone on to write, produce, direct, and star in some of the greatest comedic hits of the last forty years, even receiving an Oscar nomination for best screenplay for A Fish Called Wanda.

John Cleese is far from your garden variety entertainer. From the beginning of his career he has continually parlayed his enormous talents into advancing the political causes he believes. In 2014, Cleese released his New York Times best-selling memoir, So Anyway… . The book shares his ascent in the entertainment world, from his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University.

Alberta Ballet Presents The Fiddle & The Drum (Edmonton)

  • Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the world premiere of Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and the Drum, a storied collaboration that launched what has become Alberta Ballet’s hallmark concept—its signature portrait ballets.

The fruit of an intense 2-year labour of love between famed Canadian singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell, and Choreographer Jean Grand-Maître, witness what the songstress describes as “the most satisfying project of her career”.

Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and the Drum gives passionate expression to Mitchell’s lifelong concern with the issues of conflict, violence and humanity’s continuing devastation of the environment. Alberta Ballet dancers depict Mitchell’s most famous characters from her lyrics and artwork, at times in counterpoint, abstractly illustrating our fragile hope and potential for the creation of beauty.

Mitchell's passion for this ballet was momentous, culminating in a project that is a true expression of this national treasure’s diverse and rich talent. She invested herself in designing the sets, video installation, and libretto, punctuated by a soundtrack that includes three songs she expressly wrote for the ballet.

Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and the Drum marked a pivotal moment for Alberta Ballet. The portrait ballet series continues to grow and today includes repertoire inspired by other notable artists, including k.d. lang, Sarah McLachlan, Elton John, Gordon Lightfoot and The Tragically Hip.

Experience this exquisite ballet, and understand why it launched the most important era yet for Alberta Ballet.

Alberta Ballet Presents The Fiddle & The Drum (Calgary)

  • Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium (map)

Northern Light Theatre Presents 19 Weeks

19 Weeks (Canadian Premiere)
By Emily Steel
Co-production with Azimuth Theatre
Featuring Vanessa Sabourin

The words are rattling because the story is real. Everyone knows someone who has had an abortion or lost a pregnancy – even if they don’t talk about it. In 2016, playwright Emily Steel had a termination after her baby was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. This is her story, told honestly and publicly, because there are so many more stories out there. We want 19 Weeks to be part of a bigger conversation.

“I made the decision that I was going to tell people the truth about what happened because keeping quiet about such a traumatic experience would have felt like even more of a burden. My fear was that people would think I was a horrible, heartless person, and I had to process those feelings myself, but how people are going to perceive you cannot alter your decisions about the course of your life.

For the most part, my fears did not come true. The response of so many women was to tell me stories of their own abortions or miscarriages, and that was a huge part of the inspiration for the play. There is a lot of controversy about late abortions, but it’s not until you go through that process that you realize how much time it can take to do what you think is the most responsible thing.” – Emily Steel

Carlos Del Junco and the Blues Mongrels

It's not likely that you'll ever hear the harmonica played so well and in so many different ways than at the hands of Cuban-born Torontonian, Carlos del Junco. Simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz; delivering a seamless fusion of New Orleans second line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies and swampy roots rock.
He's won the Maple Blues Award for "Harmonica Player of the Year" eight times and has been nominated for countless other awards including a JUNO award for "Blues Album of the Year". Hold on to your blues hats because a night with Carlos del Junco and the Blues Mongrels guarantees a no-holds display of fun and melodic virtuosity.

The Swingle Singers

For more than half a century, The Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music. It all started when the session singers sang through Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier as a sight-reading exercise and found the music to have a natural swing. The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched the Swingle Singers to fame. Since then, they have won five GRAMMY awards and appeared on numerous film and TV soundtracks, including Sex and the City, Milk, Grey’s Anatomy and Glee. Their unique sound can be heard on the soundtrack to the recently released film Downsizing which is taking the film festival scene by storm.

The group’s versatility has led to collaborations with artists as diverse as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jamie Cullum and Labrinth. Luciano Berio was one of the first composers to explore the sound of the Swingles’ amplified voices in an orchestral setting with his groundbreaking "Sinfonia". The group continues to perform the piece to great acclaim around the world, with recent performances at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall and Milan’s La Scala.
