Festival Place Presents Once Upon A Frost: A New Musical

Once upon a time, in a place not too different from your own, the most peculiar season came to pass. For you see, on this year when the time arrived for the first frost of winter, none came.

This brand new musical follows the heart warming story of Elly, a shop owner who has a brush with the well-known character Jack Frost. When Jack visits Elly’s shop he loses his power to bring winter. The only option to get it back is to work with Elly to save her shop from permanently closing.

With lovable characters and catchy music, you will be left entranced by the magic of theatre.

Carol Welsman

Carol Welsman is a Canadian jazz vocalist and pianist. The six-time JUNO Award Nominee turned to her fans on social media to help select the tracks for her evocative album, For You. The result is an intimate affair, spanning songs in multiple languages including Spanish (“Besame Mucho”), French (“Les Feuilles Mortes”) and Italian (“Ti Guardero Nel Cuor”). But the bulk of the material is drawn from the Great American Songbook, and Welsman takes to classics like “Skylark,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” and “My Funny Valentine” from angles of adoration and invention. Up close and personal with just her and her piano, this is the classic cabaret concert not to be missed!

The Cardiac Shadow (Canadian Premiere)

By Clay McLeod Chapman

Co-production with Good Women Dance Collective

Featuring the women of the Good Women Dance Collective

Based on a true story – Four women are procured from the Ravensbruck concentration camp, hand-selected by SS Second Lieutenant Dr. Sigmund Rascher for a series of experiments specifically designed to measure the human body's endurance to extreme temperatures - tests that would benignly come to be known as the Cold Conference. The voices of these four women have since disappeared. Where does the human spirit go when the body must remain behind, frozen inside an atrocity?

"...We need only remember the four girls who were taken from the Ravensbruck concentration camp and made to lie naked with the frozen and all but dead Jews who survived Dr. Rascher's tank of ice water. One of these women, whose hair and eyes and figure were pleasing to Dr. Rascher, when asked by him why she had volunteered for such a task, replied, "Rather half a year in a brothel than half a year in a concentration camp."

Brian Webb Dance Company Presents Wen Wei Dance - Dialogue

Dialogue is a piece that explores themes of contact, communication, and language – both spoken and unspoken. Underlying our learned ability to speak language, there is a fundamental urge to communicate.

Drawing on Wen Wei Wang’s personal experience as a non-English speaking immigrant to Canada, Dialogue explores both the basic desire to be understood and the loneliness when one does not achieve those rare honest connections with others. Dialogue strives to break down the sophisticated and artificial systems of language and technology to examine the universality of communication and of our collective experience.

“Dialogue is not about diversity, it is diverse.” - Brian Webb
